Understanding the need for professionals with the knowledge and skills of more than one discipline within the fields of planning and design, the Department of City & Regional Planning offers a number of concurrent graduate degree programs with other departments and colleges at UC Berkeley. Concurrent degree applications are reviewed separately by the graduate admissions committees of both departments. Students may be accepted into both graduate programs, into only one department’s program, or may be denied entry to both programs. Applicants to concurrent degree programs do not need to submit a paper copy of their GRE or TOEFL scores to the Department of City and Regional Planning if scores were submitted electronically to UC Berkeley. Please see the links below for program descriptions and admissions information.
For questions about any of the concurrent programs, contact Yeri Caesar-Kaptoech, DCRP's graduate student affairs officer, at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Architecture (Master of City Planning and Master of Architecture) Admissions Deadline: December 17, 2009 DCRP and the Department of Architecture offer a concurrent degree program for exceptionally well-qualified students who hold the five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree or a four-year bachelor of arts/bachelor of science degree in architecture, as well as those who have completed equivalent degrees in related disciplines. This program allows completion of the Master of Architecture and the Master of City Planning degrees with a savings of 12 units (one semester’s course work). The program aims to combine the study of urban and planning issues with the design of buildings and sites. By providing a range of essential skills as well as a broad understanding of the social, economic, and natural factors that shape the physical environment, the concurrent degree program in architecture and city planning accomplishes what neither program achieves alone. Admissions — External Applicants Applicants to the dual degree program with the Department of Architecture should select the M.C.P./M.Arch degree option on the Graduate Division online application and submit the required materials listed on the DCRP graduate admissions webpage. M.C.P./M.Arch applicants are also required to submit an electronic copy of their portfolio in PDF format (please refer to the DCRP Detailed Application Instructions). Applicants must submit separate copies of their transcripts and portfolios under separate cover to both degree programs. Additional materials required by the Architecture Department should be sent to the Architecture Graduate Admissions Office. Please the M.Arch admissions webpage for required admission materials and instructions. Admissions — Current UC Berkeley Students Current UC Berkeley students are eligible to apply after their first semester at UCB and no later than the semester prior to the last semester of their current program. Current UCB students who apply to the dual degree program must be enrolled in a minimum of two DCRP courses while applying (or have taken DCRP courses in the past). Environmental Planning applicants should have a strong background in environmental sciences or management, landscape architecture, or city planning. Urban design applicants should have competence in design and in landscape materials and must qualify for the two-year M.L.A. program. Admission is competitive. Students must demonstrate evidence of high-quality work and potential for development based on the grade-point average, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, letters of recommendation, and examples of work. Students are encouraged to apply to the M.L.A./M.C.P. concurrent degree program after admission and enrollment in one department and during the first year; however, simultaneous application to both programs is possible. Applicants must be competitive with the two-year master’s applicants in the second department. Admissions — External Applicants Applicants to the dual degree program with the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP) should select the M.C.P./M.L.A. degree option on the Graduate Division online application and submit the required materials listed on the DCRP graduate admissions webpage. M.C.P./M.L.A. applicants are also required to submit an electronic copy of their portfolio in PDF format (please refer to the DCRP Detailed Application Instructions). Applicants must submit separate copies of their transcripts and portfolios under separate cover to both degree programs. Additional materials required by LAEP should be sent to their Graduate Admissions Office. Please the LAEP graduate admissions webpage for required admission materials and instructions. It is intended to produce graduate students who combine advanced professional training with a detailed knowledge of contemporary international issues or particular world areas or countries. The content of each M.A. program will be shaped in consultation with the departmental IAS adviser to meet the specific needs and interests of the individual student. In addition to satisfying all Graduate Division and departmental requirements for the Master of City Planning (48 units and four semesters of residence) or Ph.D. degrees, students in this concurrent program must complete a minimum of 24 units outside City and Regional Planning in the special area agreed upon with the IAS adviser. For additional information please contact Associate Professor Ananya Roy. Law (Master of City Planning and Juris Doctorate) Admissions Deadline: December 7, 2009 The Department of City & Regional Planning (DCRP) has developed concurrent degree programs with Boalt Hall at UC Berkeley and Hastings College of the Law (San Francisco), which permit qualified students to obtain both an M.C.P. degree and a J.D. degree in four years (rather than the five years which would be necessary if the programs were taken in sequence). The purpose of this program is to provide an integrated professional curriculum of greater breadth than would otherwise be available for students interested in urban land use, housing, or social policy problems. The planning curriculum offers students training in policy analysis and exposure to theories and programs that address urban development problems. Legal training provides additional analytic skills and substantive knowledge necessary for successful plan and program implementation. Graduates of the concurrent degree program are qualified for a number of professional roles at the intersection of law and planning. These include municipal attorneys, community development administrators or counsels, staff personnel on legislative committees, development administrators, planning directors, consultant planners, advisors to private clients on land use matters, staff members of governmental agencies, public interest advocates, and executive assistants to mayors, governors, and department heads. Past graduates of the program have found an impressive variety of professional opportunities available to them. Admissions — External Applicants Applicants to the dual degree program with Law should select the M.C.P./J.D. degree option and submit their recommendation letters electronically via the Online Graduate Application for Admission. All required application materials must be sent under separate cover to both degree programs. Please check both admission program websites (DCRP Graduate Admissions and Boalt Hall JD Admissions or Hastings Admissions) for required materials and instructions. Scanned copy of Graduate Division application pages 22-25 (in PDF format only) Public Health (Master of City Planning and Master of Public Health) Admissions Deadline: December 1, 2009 The concurrent degree program with the UC Berkeley School of Public Health program meets the demand for health planners looking to broaden their skills, expertise, and areas of interest. Each program normally takes two years to complete, but through the concurrent degree program, time-to-degrees can be reduced to as little as three years (as experience and coursework overlap between the two departments). Such decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. At the conclusion of their studies, students receive both the M.C.P. and Master of Public Health degrees. Admissions — External Applicants Applicants to the dual degree program with the School of Public Health Law should select the MCP/MPH degree option and submit their recommendation letters electronically via the Online Graduate Application for Admission. All required application materials must be sent under separate cover to both degree programs. Please check both admission program websites (DCRP Graduate Admissions and School of Public Health Admissions) for required materials and instructions. Deadline: December 1, for admission the following fall semester. CEE's approach to transportation is technical and analytical, while the Department of City and Regional Planning focuses on policy issues, particularly as related to the influence of transportation on the political, environmental, and social fabric of communities. In this way, the concurrent degree program enables those interested in this field to bridge the "process" and "policy" components of transportation studies in a complementary and reinforcing manner. The concurrent degree program allows the qualified student to obtain both the Master of City Planning and Master of Science degrees in about 2-1/2 years. Admissions — External Applicants Applicants to the dual degree program with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering should select the M.C.P./M.S. degree option on the Graduate Division online application and submit the materials listed on the DCRP graduate admissions webpage. Applicants must submit separate copies of their transcripts under separate cover to both degree programs. Additional materials required for Civil and Environmental Engineering should be sent to the CEE Graduate Admissions Office. Please check the Transportation Engineering graduate admissions website for required admission materials and instructions.
