2007-08 Undergraduate Prizes & Awards

  • Friesen Prize for Academic Achievement. Established through a gift by the Friesen family, this $500 prize is given to the graduating Urban Studies student with the highest overall grade-point average. The prize is administered by the Urban Studies committee.

  • Friesen Prize for Best Paper in Urban Studies. Established through a gift by the Friesen family, this $500 prize is given each year to the best research, theory, or policy and planning analysis paper completed in an Urban Studies course. Paper submissions must be nominated by Urban Studies faculty (no more than three submissions per faculty member). The prize is open to all undergraduate students in all majors currently enrolled at UC Berkeley. Papers are evaluated in a blind review process by the Urban Studies committee.

    Application Process: Submit your paper with a cover sheet with your name, faculty sponsor, signature of faculty sponsor, and the 2007 course for which the paper was completed.

    Deadline: April 7, 2008.

  • Chung Leadership Prize. Established through a recent gift by the Chung family, this $1,000 prize is given each year to an Urban Studies sophomore or junior in order to support a public service project or internship that he or she will undertake during the summer. Upon completion of the public service, the recipient is expected to write a professional report about the experience and present it in a public forum. The prize is administered by the Urban Studies committee.

    Application Process: Submit a 1,000-word description of your proposed project/internship and a copy of your transcript.

    Deadline: April 7, 2008, for public service work in summer 2008.

  • Jason Yuen Scholarship. Established through a gift by Joan Lam in memory of Jason Yuen, this $1,500 scholarship is available to all declared Urban Studies students (except graduating seniors). The scholarship recognizes academic and community service excellence. The scholarship is applied toward tuition for the following fall semester. The prize is administered by the Urban Studies committee.

    Application Process: Please submit (1) a statement of purpose that addresses the student's service to the community and extracurricular interests; (2) one letter of recommendation; and (3) a statement of financial need.

    Deadline: April 7, 2008.

  • Judith Lee Stronach Undergraduate Travel Scholarships. Established through a gift by Raymond Lifchez in memory of Judith Lee Stronach, this summer travel fellowship is available to undergraduate students in the College of Environmental Design for travel as "service-learning opportunities." Applications, due in the spring semester, are expected to include a proposal for hands-on work in a community along with an itinerary and budget. The fellowship is administered by the JLS Fellowship committee, which has faculty representatives from the various CED departments.

    Deadline: March 31, 2008 at 5 p.m., for travel during summer 2008.

  • College of Environmental Design Alumnae Association (CEDAA) Professional Promise Award. This award is given each year to one graduating Urban Studies student in recognition of "professional promise" in the field of urban studies and planning. Students are nominated by various faculty and the final candidate is selected by the Urban Studies committee.

  • Departmental Citation. Every year, each department on campus names one graduating student as the recipient of its Departmental Citation. This citation recognizes academic achievement and excellence. The prize is administered by the Urban Studies committee.
